If Hedgeworth has been away from the alien compound a while, he may not know of the sheriff's earlier assistance to his kind nor that the sheriff knows about them. Could come as quite a shock!

We know the foreman took care of at least one worker. The other may be working with him or has been taken care of as well. And it seems the foreman didn't go back to the mining camp as he's missing, too. It's likely Hedgeworth isn't involved with whatever the foreman is doing otherwise why go to the sheriff?
