The ballroom was brightly lit, figures moving in slow, paced curves to the music. The fact that said ballroom was only a few feet across and atop a table did little to diminish the solemn, yet cheerful atmosphere of the gathering. Surrounding the ballroom were a number of rather larger polar bears in neat suits wearing serious expressions. Nearby, on a small patch of empty flow two more moderately sized creatures attempted a waltz, a dance neither actually knew and both were attempting to copy from the other participants nearby without looking inept or suspicious.
"So this guy... he runs the rodent mafia...?"
"More or less, yes."
"And you're a cop..."
"And family, sort of."
"Is that... legal...?"
A part of Judy's mind noted that no, technically it very much wasn't. On the other hand, life was never clear cut and this was one of those grey areas where you had to have some discretion. Besides, Mr Big had paid for their absolutely wonderful outfits, and Gideon had catered the affair. (He was remarkably good at pasta dishes, though he'd had to prepare everything with the aid of a magnifying glass.) If anything happened now the both of them could conceivably be locked away till the cows came home. (And who knew when THAT would be?) All in all it was best, in her opinion, to just enjoy the event and not think too hard about the finer details.
Gideon, for his part, was rather uncomfortable. It wasn't the company or event, but his suit was incredibly fancy, and he couldn't do fancy for the life of him. Everything was new, the music, the decorations, the bears. This wasn't anything like what they had back home where, generally speaking, a wedding was a much less formal affair with a much larger cake. (He'd had two slices which could have been charitably dismissed as crumbs.) He was still hungry, feeling awkward and rather itchy. The suit poked him in places he'd forgot he had. Judy of course looked marvelous,he didn't know how she managed it. The long black dress seemed to flow as she moved, like a shadow given weight. She always had an easy ability to just make the most of any situation, something he sorely lacked.
"So uh... who's gettin' married again?"
"Us, remember?"
There was a sudden jolt as Gideon nearly fell over in shock. He stared, open mouthed as Judy suppressed a wry smirk. It very slowly dawned on him that she had been kidding, you never could be sure with her, or how they did things in the big city. Of course that was the plan, eventually, once things were sorted out. (Especially Stu Hopps and his supply of fox tasers.) but the subject always made him nervous. It was uncharted territory for the both of them.
"Heh... ok, you got me there."
"Not until you propose I haven't. And I happen to know someone who could get us a great deal on wedding rings."
Well that about settled it, Judy had her mind set on it and when that happened there wasn't much anyone could do to change it. Gideon felt two paws on his shoulder, gently but firmly puling him down towards the smiling face staring up at him. He smiled back, leaned forward and shut his eyes as they met, still trying to remember if the next dance step was forward or back.
