What I mean is, if a cat knows it can't win a situation, it will, normally, run away. However, that doesn't mean a cat will run from EVERY situation. Cats are like humans. Some are cocky and think they can whip the world, others are smart enough to assess the situation and decide whether or not they want to take the chance. Of course, all that said, Nick does know Judy well enough to know his odds of successfully keeping her from hurting him. As I said somewhere else here, she did call him to help her.
I was thinking something more like this:

If there was ever any doubt, Nick saying that he's not too stupid to run away proves he's full blood fox. But, then, foxes also have a knack for wearing an opponent out by using the old Muhammad Ali line of "Float like a butterfly." I doubt very seriously Nick would sting like a bee where Judy's concerned, especially after she called him to tell him she needed help.
I'm fairly sure Mr. Otterton was in an isolation or quarantine room during that scene, though, and that Mrs. Otterton was looking in on him through a pane of glass from an adjoining room or hallway, so he probably couldn't hear or smell her from there, or at least not enough to trigger any sense of recognition. (And given that they still didn't know what was causing the "savage syndrome" or how it was spread, it seems likely that they wouldn't have let her break quarantine and actually go into the same room with him.)
I remember that detail, the pane of glass -- I don't remember his post-asylum holding cell being hermetically sealed though, considering the units at the asylum had large air circulation holes it doesn't seem that communicability via air was that big of a concern.
They did do a wonderful misdirection with Manchas though, before the big reveal I thought it was communicated like rabies/lycanthropy with that big face wound he was sporting from a tinsy widdle otter.

Good luck to you, Nick. I honestly have no idea how this could go. Just keep the Ottertons in mind, when she said "That's not my Emmet." Just remember nick, the drug not only robs a mammal of "their civilized mind", but cranks their aggression to eleven -- it's practically rabies.
