It's not just Australia, we say 'Mate' in New Zealand as well.

It is one of those cultural differences that's fun to experience when visiting the US. 'She'll be right' 'No worries' 'Yeah, nah, yeah' 'Good on ya' ect, ect. They just go on and on :}

Knackered, Munted, Skody, Chur, Heaps, Squizz, Hard out, Bang on, Suss, Chocka, aeh....
I could go on and on with kiwi slang, which I'm sure more than a few have cross pollinated to oz.
