Lots of practice! I had to do a professional painting a couple months back that I spent WEEKS ON and hired a model and her black German Shepherd dog for, so I learned a lot about painting black fur and drawing facial proportions with that. On top of that I've also recently done some photo studies of wolves and began using reference more :) Studies help so much!!
