What amazed me most about the series was just how true to species some of the characters were... and left a burning question of, "How DO they function?" Take the penguin and equine here. Flipper and hooved 'hands' respectively yet they're able to dress themselves and even work the tools of their trade.
Perhaps both size and maneuverability. And otters have clever hands, useful for triage and field surgery. And both are aquatic and naturally agile, which means they are made for zero-g acrobatics as well, unlike horses and foxes, for example. Handy when you need to do delicate no-way-is-up operations aboard vessels like these. Even here, one of the penguin techs can be seen "flying" into the frame.
