(checks) Yep. A Ureallian, an amphibious race. He was even going to be part of the Jedi Bendu in the early drafts. Lucas decided to make him human to have more of a relationship between the central characters, so Chewbacca took over the "alien sidekick" role.
After that, he was originally going to have more of a traditional "pirate" look -- big, burly and bearded -- but by the third draft, he was more or less the brash Corellian we know and love.
