Lol I wouldn't put it past them to test ya. They boggle because, when they are really happy/relaxed (or sometimes stressed), they grind/chatter their teeth real fast and their eyes sit right on their jaw muscles or somesuch so it causes their eyes to pop out rapidly. It is so odd.

I'm glad it's cuz they were happy though, I'm used to animals' eyes bulging because they're so upset (I was raised with rabbits all my life, and their eyes get huge when they're upset), but this sounds more like a 'cat purring because it's happy/to self-soothe' type of situation and that is neat.
