Yep, I remember sitting on the bus home from work hacking 8085 assembler out of my head for a similar project. Our instructor couldn't believe it worked first try (I got lucky)...

It's clear. But in 21th century the virtual-only prototyping (like in Proteus etc.) is more preferable for debugging purposes.

Expensive, extra steps, too much effort to fix an oops. Doesn't foresee issues with circuits that haven't been tested before. Digital simulations are great and all, but just let me play in the real world.

I agree with Perfesser-Bear, I can get an idea of what i want to do in something like every circuit but things do not always work as simulated.
