Somehow every few weeks, just like clockwork, the local dragoness would start stealing livestock and making trouble around the town. Each time the town would draw names out of a jar to see who would be sacrificed to appease the dragon. Each time Nico's name would be drawn, and the townsfolk would drag him to the cave and chain him up by the entrance for the dragon to have her way with him. And, without fail, a few days later Cayes would roll in with sword in hand and fight the dragon to rescue Nico from her evil clutches. Then a few weeks later, the dragon, having miraculously healed of her mortal wounds, would show up and start stealing livestock again.
One might question whether there was a little collusion going on, an underhanded deal made between a few interested parties. But if there was, Nico was never let in on the secret of his terribly poor luck.
