The air was heavy in the thick jungle surrounding the Semphal Mountain. The young fox took a moment to wipe the sweat away from his brow as he continued forward, the environment not exactly the most fit for people of his kind. This was his third day of exploring the jungle alone, but at least a few weeks since he had set out on his quest.
Rumors had been circulating around four mainland countries of Zemliya over the past year regarding a set of treasures, once lost after the turning of the second era, now resurfaced: the Orbs of Nature. It was not as though they had been entirely forgotten, having been mentioned in at least a dozen books on old magic, histories of the Thyle Empire, and even children’s tales. Each of the orbs were linked to a specific element, though their exact number tended to vary depending on what source was consulted. However, if there was any truth to be had in these accounts, as the legends claim, then finding an Orb of Nature would give the wielder some measure of power over the respective element, if they knew how to tap into it properly. It is also agreed among scholars that collecting all of the orbs would grant another benefit; however, these scholars do not agree on what that boon might be. One claim may be that a wish is granted to whoever gathers the orbs; another states that the collector would ascend from the mortal plane into godhood, as well as countless other theories, each more outlandish than the last.
Even if the legends weren’t true, it was at least widely known that the Orbs were highly valuable, worth enough gold to build a castle to the right buyer. And, as rumor would have it, the Orb of Fire was found. Everyone was talking about how the Great King Marxa of Welat had uncovered the Orb. Of course, very few people had actually seen the Orb with their own eyes, but the excitement of the discovery alone had made waves throughout the mainlands. Fortune tellers began to claim that they could decipher the location of the remaining orbs for a nominal fee. Expedition parties were gathered to travel into wild territories and ancient ruins to look for them. The mage societies were unsurprisingly quiet about the rumors, contrasted with every tavern in every city or town where at least once a night someone would make mention of the Orbs.
The city of Bandari was no different. A port city on the southern border of Nochi, it saw a lot of traffic between the mainland and the Sovreign Islands. It was a place that was easy to find work regardless of one’s profession. It was also where Kiyn had started his quest for one of the Orbs. He had made his way to one of the jewelers in the city to sell an old ruby necklace he found on his last adventure. The arctic fox wasn’t afraid of the more dangerous jobs, as evidenced by the large sword slung across his back, but typical mercenary work tended to bore him, and he hated being told who he needed to fight to earn decent coin. The feline jeweler seemed impressed with the necklace and asked Kiyn about how he came across it, the tale of which he was all too happy to regale. It also helped the fox’s position for the jeweler to know that he hadn’t stolen the necklace from someone in the first place.
The eyes of the cat seemed to light up as he offered Kiyn a job, claiming that he knew the location of one of the Orbs of Nature. At first the vulpine adventurer was skeptical. He had heard the rumors surrounding the Orbs, and had even done a little research on them himself once the discovery had been made, but he never expected to see one in person, let alone find one himself. The jeweler went on to explain to him, in excrutiating detail, the science behind his claim. It included multiple eye-witness accounts dating back to the second era, maps of the Semphal mountain, and even extreme weather events that had been catalogued over the past few centuries. In the end, the presentation was enough to convince Kiyn to take the job, though he was mostly concerned about the considerable reward the jeweler promised if he was able to return with the Orb.
After agreeing to it, the cat gave him a small sum to cover his expenses, in addition to the gold for the ruby necklace, and was sent off with the promise to not tell anyone else about his mission. He hardly needed to promise that, though; Kiyn wasn’t about to let anyone else tag along and share the reward, or worse yet steal the Orb from him before or after reclaiming it. These thoughts circled through the fox’s head more so toward the beginning of his adventure. Three days of exploring the jungle, in the location that the feline jeweler had marked down for him, had been eroding his confidence. He was sure that he had been over every inch of the area where the Orb should be, and the cat seemed adamant about the accuracy of his research.
The young treasure hunter sat down on a large rock to rest for a moment, closing his eyes and rolling his shoulders to try and shake off the frustration and relax his tired muscles. His ears swiveled to hear the faint sound of running water, the animals making all the usual sounds in the trees, as if to give a signal that there was no danger nearby. Despite the assumed safety of his immediate surroundings, his frustration was growing. At this distance he could still make it back to his camp with sunlight to spare, get the fire going for dinner and decide whether he wanted to extend his exploration another day or two. It was no difficulty finding wildlife to hunt in the jungle, though he was running low on water sooner than he had expected...
It was at that moment that the fox’s eyes opened with a realization. He reached into the pack on his belt and produced the map the cat had made for him. Kiyn was fairly certain of his current location and had his camp marked down as well; but, the map he was using did not show any rivers running anywhere near him. So why did he hear running water? The fox got back on his feet and started trekking toward the sound of the mysterious river. Soon enough the arctic fox stumbled through the dense foliage long enough to discover the source of the sound, and almost immediately dropped to his knees to drink from it.
For the time being Kiyn was happy enough to find a source of fresh water out here instead of having to travel back, though he soon remembered how strange it was to find this landmark in the first place. After double checking the map just to be sure he hadn’t gone crazy, the adventurer looked around the river but discovered nothing. So, he decided to travel up the river to see if he could find anything. As he went on he could hear the sound of water getting louder, as if there were rapids farther on. That theory was thrown out the window as eventually the sound was great enough to roar through the trees.
Kiyn was nearing the base of the mountain by now, well outside the area the feline had marked for him. In time he found the source of the river, as well as the roaring he heard through the trees: a waterfall that spilled down from above the tree line. He took a moment to marvel at it, enjoying the exploration, before scanning the area again. This time he was met with a little more luck. He noticed a small cove that hid a wall covered up with vines. Upon closer inspection, the wall was far too flat to have been occurred naturally. A smile tugged at his lips as he neared the mysterious wall, the area around him hazy from the rushing waterfall and hot air. Brushing away some of the vines, he could see that there was a crease in the middle of the wall; more specifically, he found out that the wall was in fact a door.
Now feeling more excited than he ever had on this quest, and without any apparent way of opening this mysterious door, Kiyn pushed as hard as he could on it, and was even more excited when it gave way. Grunting with each push and step, he could see a bright light emanating from inside the hidden ruin. When it was wide enough, the fox slipped through the gap in the doors while they seemed to do the rest for him, parting all the way to the sides as if to allow his entry. Instinctually the fox drew his sword, though there were no immediate warning signs. There were no torches or sources of fire inside the ruin either, but somehow the ceiling was opened up to allow sunlight inside. The room itself was not very large, but on the wall opposite the door he could see a fantastic mural. It was engraved in a writing that Kiyn did not understand, all circled around the depiction of six spheres, each a different color. He studied it for a while, only to notice the glint at the bottom of his vision.
He looked down and saw a pedestal at the center of the room, holding up a small blue orb that was just a bit larger than his fist. The fox’s golden eyes were fixated on it as he slowly approached the stand, reaching out to touch it testingly. Nothing. His heart was beating a mile a minute, just quietly praying that there wasn’t some kind of ancient trap to be set off once he picked it up. The vulpine’s paw shook a little when it hovered over the orb despite his efforts to calm his breathing, his other paw gripping the handle of his sword tightly. Thankfully his fears turned out to be just imagination, picking up the deep blue orb and inspecting it more closely with a defusing sigh of relief. It felt cool to the touch, like a smooth stone; not as heavy as he would have expected, but it also didn’t seem fragile. As he stared at it, small aqua lights began to brighten up and swirl around inside the orb, reacting to his presence and making the sphere glow in soothing blue. Now Kiyn knew for sure that he had found the Orb of Water. His eyes were wide in elation, staring at the dancing lights as thoughts of his reward raced in his head, only to stop as another entered the back of his mind: why stop here?
What was the cat going to do with the orb anyway? It was more than likely that he didn’t know how to use it, and was only going to turn it over for a larger profit. And what about the other Orbs? There might be others who were trying just as hard to discover their location, and maybe someone who would know how to use their power. All of it was leading up to the real question he was asking himself: what if he got them all? Even with the one Orb he could surely get a larger reward from someone else, and if somehow he managed to gather all six, then...the possibilities were endless.
A sly grin spread across Kiyn’s muzzle as he put his sword back into its sheath, still holding the Orb in his hand. The real adventure was just beginning.
So a little background here. I started watching
KhatMedic recently and I really wanted to get something from her at some point. I also wanted to get something where I wasn't all femmy or subby (for once), so when she put this YCH out I pulled the trigger and got lucky :D
I ALSO have been meaning to try my hand at writing another story, as it has been a looooong time since I've done anything creatively in that respect. Give it a read and let me know how it goes, if you can ever stop looking at how sexy I am oh my god I'm such a badass.
