Prehistoric Times: The European Cave Lion
Wow. This scan does it no justice, but whatever 9.9
A European Cave lion(panthera leo spelaea) takes shelter from a storm in a small cave once inhabited by neanderthals. This feline was large, some attained 1.2 meters(or taller) at the shoulder and 7ft in length not including its tail. This cat may have been 5-33% larger than the modern lion, but it is still smaller than the American Cave Lion(another large Pleistocene cat).
This is for PT magazine. Its a nice opportunity to get my art "out there". Next, I will try and do an american cave lion.
About this image..
When applying "real" lighting the lion would be in silhouette, however, I felt it was appropriate to put a warm aura with yellow ochres to evoke a cozy feel.
This drawing was very experimental. I put together watercolor, color pencil, and black and white inks to see what would happen, lol
So, this is what it is. At this point i'm tired of looking at it cause it dragged on far too long for a 6"x9" drawing(you can thank college for that).

Yeah, thats pretty much it. Theirs acrylics on here too.
Basicly you need to make a monochromatic under painting which means you shade everything in the same color. Then you let it dry and add the normal colors on top with transparency so its more like a tint on top of the dark colors. Then you let that dry and add color pencil. Its a long process but the effects are cool.
It takes practice, like anything else. I had no idea what the hell i was doing until this painting, i started getting the results i wanted.

Im not a big fan of the roof either, but it not being there would mean a huge gaping hole with a already distracting snowstorm, and I had to indicate the roof somewhere because it might be hard to pull off the fact that its inside a cave. I do agree the rocks came out a little straight looking.
lol I DO skip a few people. =P
I do care that people liked it enough to favorite it, so I express my gratitude while drinking my coffee in the morning =P
Thanks.
Yes the snow might be on the bright side, I agree with that. Ill be more careful next time.

Holy fucking shit potatos man! this is freaken unreal O.O look at all that detail, i didnt even know someone could DRAW that much freaken detail, holy crap! What i love most about her fur, is all the wonderful colors in it. The hues and how they mix match in her coat, it gives it a very realistic and rugged look. I love this, it shows hardcore skill :)
Nope, no freebies, and I was interviewed in one of the issues too. :) The publication is so small (though you'd think more stores would carry it since dinosaurs are so RAD!) that I don't think Mike could afford to give out issues to everyone who submitted art. It's a free promotion for us artists anyway. (woot!)
Thats what I thought: small publication. My illustration professor was kind of dissapointed over the fact I did free art for a magazine and said I was just being taken advantage of. But Mike does not seem like that to me =/ , I think its just a matter of lack of money for them or something. I kind of feel conflicted on wether or not to do art for them anymore based on what my professor said. The "society of illustrators and the AIIQ Frowns upon it http://www.aiiq.qc.ca/info.do?secti.....rique" -.-
I did it for fun and for exposure, mostly.

If your having fun doing it, then do it. Mike is a nice guy and he knows it's a win-win for both parties. He get's art for his magazine and artist's get promoted. I see it as a kick in the pants to put out another portfolio piece. :)
I only say "don't do free art" if it's for someone's specific project that would call for hiring an artist but they just don't want to pay. Usually they promise you money "if the project is successful" (if it isn't, they blame your art), tell you they'll credit you or tell you you could "put it on your resume." The last two go without saying. If they have to say it, they intend to use you for your inexperience. Especially watch out for people who go to schools or are looking for beginners. We had a guy come to our school looking for "illustrator's in need of some good experience." One google search showed that the guy had cheated artists in the past by taking they're work without paying, and dropping communication. :|

I think thats great logic to go by :)
That happens to us a lot too. I got a job offer, and the guy wanted to pay me by "writing a letter of recommendation" for wahtever next job i get *eyeroll*. Luckily (the same teacher that told me not to do free art) stepped in and told him thats not how it works.
How exciting! The next issues they will need andrewsarchuses and Hyaenodontids! :D These guys are cool critters.
