I prefer to have a different device for each need: if I want to listen to music, the mp3 player / radio; if I want to take pictures, the camera; if I want to play games, the DS lite... My cellphone is a cheap Nokia and I use it solely as a phone.
If you do this your bag or pockets will be more bulky, but you don't depend so much on one single device which might break or have no battery and then you're screwed. Plus, generally independent devices are better at their own function. For instance a mobile phone will never take pictures as good as a good compact camera will, with zoom and all.
