I WISH I COULD! I hate gawkers, and I especially hate ones that talk to me while I work! There are only a few ways you can professionally say "go away" and I don't trust in myself to have mastered them—I grew up in a house where we basically growled and snarled to get each other out of our hair, I find its my instinctive reaction when I'm under stress.. So I just keep to myself and ignore them.
Then I go home and write a comic about it, obv lmao

Hahaha dang.. well, to be fair I haven't always been too car savvy myself. I still remember the first time my car started to make noise--I was maybe 17 or 18. I called my mom freaking out and explained that the car was tapping loudly and she asked "checked the dipstick to see if there's oil."
I replied in a half panic "What is a dipstick?" and I'll never forget her hilarious response, "You're the dipstick! I'll be right there." So she meets me at the gas station that I pulled into and checks.. well sure enough there wasn't enough oil in the engine and my valvetrain was starved which was producing the loud tap that I'd heard. I had no idea that I'd even needed an oil change, let alone anything else! A few months later, I slid in the rain and my dad told me my tires were not only bald but that the steel ply was showing.
Hard to believe that same idiot works on peoples cars now XD

HAHA. such innocent and humble beginnings to a greasehound. love your moms answer, you set it up perfectly.
yea, the worst i did in my youth was rebuild an engine and i could not afford an new oil pump so put on the old. so in retribution my engine gave me a month then welded the no#4piston to the sidewall. never knew a a cabin could fill with black smoke so fast.

Holy crap! That sucks balls that all that was caused by just an oil pump!
I'm still learning how to do rebuilds. My shop doesn't offer overhauls so I'm gonna have to go to school for it so that I can eventually work in a performance shop. Hopefully I won't have any horror stories like that, buuuut knowing me I probably will XD

yea well i learned by my brother letting me use his garage, suggest i get a haynes manual, and wishing me luck.
i'm full of automotive learning stories, like,.. brake fluid siphons water out the air, making it useless. thankfully i drove a standard, torque wrenches are important. prevents tire loss at 70 on an off ramp,.. fun tidbits like that. oh and building a wireing harness for a classic car to save a K or so is a suicide mission. just,.. just pay the money.
the horror, the horror....

well, unlike the schematic, it is not easy at all. measure saulder and seal if it's humid you risk corrosion or if it rains and is humid you risk sealing water in the wires and then get to play with the single circuit that for whatever reason defies the schematic and science to do its own thing. gauge is important, if you make one mistake, you have to desaulder, deconstruct and go at it again. then you get the joy of routing and bundling correctly and believe it or not it is important to understand bleed over induction and proper grounding. if you install a sound system you need to find new routing to avoid induction from the running wires.
aannd it quickly becomes a spaghetti farm, and after a while you just wanna make a noose of wire.
it passes the time.

hahaa well, my biggest OMG-don't-do-that to date would be to never ever ever buy parts on ebay. I know that may seem obvious to some folks but for me, it was a lesson I had to learn the hard way. Dx
See, I used to have this Honda that would leave me stranded on the side of the road so many times, that I went from loving it to hating it so much. The first time, it was an ignition switch which was fixed the same day for $60. The second time, it was my distributor. Not just the cap and rotor, but the entire assembly! And my broke ass couldn't afford to pay $300 for one at Honda.
But wait! There was one on ebay for $87! Amaaaazing graaaceeee
So I go to install my cheap ass ebay distributor and the first bad thing that happens is, the part that connects to the camshaft breaks off when I go to press it in. Into two pieces. I'm incredibly annoyed at this point, so I take the one off my old distributor and use that.
Fast forward two months. I'm passing an 18 wheeler on the highway when my car immediately loses its ability to accelerate. The rpm drops to 1000 and stays there, all of my dashlights come on and I roll to a stop. Luckily my boyfriend has a pickup truck, so he towed me home.
Took apart the dist. the next day, found the linkage to the camshaft had broken apart. It was secured only by a pin (lord knows where that pin went when it flew off) whereas the original distributor had the connector secured by a pin wrapped in a spring. The original was also made of more versatile metals, the ebay part looked like it was made out of that fake alloy stuff they use on newer Fords.
So yeah, that's my biggest one to date xD I also wanted to do a timing belt myself so I removed the driver side wheel, only to find out I didn't have strong enough tools for 200 ft-lbs of torque needed to remove the engine mounts.. So I put the wheel back on and forgot to tighten the lugnuts because derp. So the next day, boyfriend and I decide to take it to the shop, I'm in the car steering it and he's pulling me along when I hear a THUD as the front wheel comes off.. I STILL don't know how it didn't damage the tie rods, but we got the wheel back on and drove off as quick as we could with our heads down.. there maaay have been one or two people watching us and laughing XD

Hahahaha,
awesome. there are those moments. its a rookie right of passage to buy that Chinese knock off part that demolished everything. the tools too, i wrung the heads off three extensions, then got a real extension then i started shattering sockets. and i mean shattering. so now i don't buy anything unless its lifetime warranty.

yea, but i have had the same breaker bar for 14 years. seventy-five bucks well spent.
it really does make a difference.
thing is don't be scared to try new things. first time i did a rebuild i was so scared and the worst part was it was my only vehicle. but it died, and so with a motto i cant break what's already broke, went in and great success later.
but the worst is GM. i know why its so expensive. their design team was built of retarded monkeys managed by a sadist.

he used to swear by them, years ago, but he learned after that. the thing with GM is they use a short stroke that picked up speed faster, and plateaued just as fast but hey, you looked good off the line.
but really people buy GM because in the short term they're the cheapest. it's like software development, why make a quality product when so much money can be made off fixing it.

that and people that can't tell oil from gasoline. that is your real customer base.
i think the funniest thing was when i worked in a hospital someone would get a $300 bill and bitch and moan about the cost. then go to the mechanic and pay $1600 and think its not that bad.
never quite got that one.
