This description will contain some spoilers for Fallout 2, so be warned.
I was playing fallout 4 this weekend and ( through a bit of nostalgia ) reminded me of Fallout 2's Deathclaws from Vault 13. Not only were these guys as intelligent as humans were, but they were also seeking to live in peace with them... ( and they got slaughtered as a reward... sigh )
Gosh I wished i would have seen them rendered in the fallout 4 engine... but scince that's not happening, I tried my hand at some fanart showing an alternate relaity where they did not get killed ( that bugged good ending hidden in the game files ) where they survived and flourished in and around vault 13.
This would be my interpretation of the characters ( from left to right ) Gruthar, Kerith, and one of their hatchlings, the albino deathclaw Goris.
I tried to mix the fallout 4 deathclaw design ( cause they so purdy ) with the color scheme of the fallout 2 deathclaws. Don't jump on me for inconsistencies, this is mearly my interpretation of it.
( I also couldn't be bothered to add shadows... maybe I'll update this at a later date... )

well aparently quite a few... because even before the Enclave got to them, somebody living there tried to bomb the matron... and I distinctly remember another idiot in one of the dorms who insisted the deathclaws were going to eat them all... thankfully not all of theh umans shared these opinions.
Its the Fallout 2 restoration project by Killap, it adds/restores a ton of missing content cut from the original game as well as fixing a crazy amount of bugs. There might be other restoration projects that restore the good deathclaw end but killaps is the only one I know about. You should go try it out: http://killap.net/ and it should work with steam, it worked last time I used it.
Actually...there was alternative ending for them that didn't get implemented for some reason (likely bug. F2 had plenty, haha).
Basically, remember the doctor at Navaroo? The Deathclaw he had? If you decide to sneak in, he mentions he found out they are indeed intelligent and that the one he has only plays dumb. He also mentions he is yet to finish report about it. So, if you killed him before he does that (I believe you had 2 ingame weeks to do it, from the moment you exit V13) and let the deathclaw go, so he can warn his tribe (like he said he would), Enclave never learns of them and they survive.

Really, a talented enough modder could possibly add something like this. But they would need modelers, animators, voice actors, and writers, to help string everything together in a quality fashion to make it interesting and engaging.
I could at least do the writing...maybe.. I'm not sure I'd be talented enough for something like that.

The Fallout 4 deathclaws really do look amazing. I really wish that Bethseda would remake the Black Isle originals in their new engine.
The only problem really is the gigantic scale of the worlds in Fallout, and Fallout 2, which are both much larger than the game engine can handle. Unless of course one does something silly, like have large regions around the important points like the regions in the current games, with long distance travel (like you get between DLC regions) between each of the far flung points.
As people have mentioned, the Fallout 2 Restoration Patch fixes the ending for the Vault 13 deathclaws; if I recall you just need to save Xarn at Navarro (or at least kill Dr. Schreber) and then finish up the oil platform before two weeks. (Otherwise the deathclaws get wiped out by the Enclave.)

Even though canonically the Enclave wiped out Gruthar's pack of the Holy 13, there are two possible survivers....
Goris an Albino Deathclaw companion to the Chosen one.... and Xarn, who was captured at Navarro and possibly released by the Chosen one.
Very slim pickings for the genepool so future generations won't be AS smart... but some more docile semi intelligent Deathclaws are still possible.

well it jsut irked me that the cool characters always seem to get shafted like this. There was a possible good ending for them in the game, but it was bugged in the vanilla game and unatainable., and even if it wasn't, you ahd to rush through the game to avoid it... which is not a way I like playing these type of games.
It's not *canon* unless confirmed by the creators. Since the good ending can't be accessed due to a bug, it should be considered equally valid.
Still, this is something that frustrates me to no end : "Hey guys ! Let's give human-level intelligence to Fallout's sexiest monsters, then never make them appear ever again !"

The art piece is very nice, liking it and no spoiler to me, banging my own drum by saying to be a veteran fan of the series having completed all games in series (even awful BoS, PS2) Really liked of this twist with the Deathclaws and Goris was in ways my favorite companions cause of, well being Deathclaw like that.
Also if not aware, theres Sentient Deathclaws also in the non canon? game Fallout Tactics, of course you can decide if accepting them to your Brotherhood of Steel ranks or not, I sure did!

Honestly, in terms of setting and story, Fallout Tactics was my most favorite allout game. It was not a real RPG because it gave yu very little choices, but when it did give you a choice it felt important.
And the ending of Fallout Tactics ( the purely good ending ) was one of the most satisfying game endings I have encountered. ( i obviously recruited everybody and turned the xenophobic and exclusivitic BOS in to a force for changing the wasteland for then better, enforcing equality among it's citizens.
Truly that was my most favorite setting out of all Fallout games!
I will have to draw my team from that game at some point.

About Tactics, sadly I cannot really include it to my favorites in the end, it was really nice and hoped it would have been actually used visually as next Fallout back then too. But, I have to like main series more still, original 1-2 with their flaws of course, and New Vegas are my definite favorites even these days. Though I have to admit that modding them a bit is giving the games more decent new playability, such as Fallout Fixt for original, including being able to extend the time limit for mutant attacks to all cities if you wish to have all good ending to all places. The time limit to that kind of felt bit too strict, cause I like exploring and taking my own time occasionally.
For Fallout 2 theres the Restoration Project that has been absolutely awesome cause of all the unused content and new additions even going as far as customized sprites, really recommending these if having not tried them yet. Still the games might crash and such cause hey that's Fallout for ya!
As well for Tactics overall, kinda did like that power armor design the game used there as well, did look bad ass to me at least.

Heh, I remember there is few deathclaws in Fallout 3 and Fallout 4 that can be neutral to you, if you do few things
In third fallout, you can find 2 of them at least. One of them is under bridge in cage, guarded by few Enclave asses and second one is in Enclave base, where you get by going on story line. Free them from cage, and there you go, a neutral Deathclaw^^
In Fallout 4, however, there is whole quest line to it. Group of mercinaries stolen Deathclaw eggs by contract with one guy in Diamond-City, but got tracked down by angry Deathclaw to the small town, and group was wiped out in museum. We should kill that Deathclaw and take eggs. Then we can deiliver them to Diamond-City, or go to the north and put them in nest. There is another Deathclaw, and as you apporach nest, it starts to go out from cave. If you're quick enough, you can put eggs in nest and step back. It will dig eggs deeper in nest, and will become neutral to you, also, you can speak with it, by phrases "No one is gonna be eaten today, right?" and so on.

Great fanart.
To them, a deathclaw is a feral ghoul to a ghoul, both in appearance and behaviour. It was always the intelligent deathclaws intention to spread across wasteland America, incorporate humans into their family pack, and eventually rebuild. They would become formidable. You don't want to be part of their family? You see them as enemies? Fine, then deal with a deathclaw strapped in power-armor holding a minigun.
In the tradition of unlucky numbers, they should inhabit Vaults 4, 9, 17 (after kicking out the super mutants), and 39, in future games.

I know this was made a few years ago but I gotta point out, that I love the representation here of everyone. The designs are so unique and stand out so much for each of our named Deathclaws. I think the merging of the various Deathclaw iterations was done wonderfully! Especially Gruthar, I know he's the pack Alpha and everything, but you made him especially appealing, haha. I would love to see these designs revisited and used in something else from you someday.
Man, this drawing is so old, it's almost painfull to look at ( for me ). Still, glad you like it. Deathclaws are so cool, and we actually had intelligent friendly ones in fallout 2. Wish they'd be highlighted like this some more. Especially updated with the gorgeous models they had in fallout 4.

Oh, don't be so harsh on yourself! It's an incredibly unique idea, like I said, the interpretation is great! My picture of Gruthar, Kerith, and Goris largely follows these designs. Makes me wish that somewhere they did have a happier ending. But, alas, intelligent Deathclaws are basically scrubbed from the canon. Shame, really. That's where we make our own fun, like this piece here! My own character was made of a desire to explore the concept of an intelligent Deathclaw. The Fallout 4 models are incredibly gorgeous, for sure. But, I still think you deserve credit for your design's here! The dimorphism between Gruthar and Kerith especially. *chef's kiss*
