This particular song has been over 5yrs. in the making. I remember debuting the original to the pirate cat @ Anthrocon many years ago. The original base line was way different, but the melody works with the new back beat I was able to create. The beginning part of the melody is quite old, and only recognizable to a select few. I was still coming up with a lot of the melody on the fly as the original melody wasn't in this exact key. So... a lot of this is new, and the melody I know I had a few "messups". I was still coming up with the melody "on the fly" along with this new way of having the background pre-recorded. This song is easily my most technical utilizing the track features that I can with Garage Band and using multiple instruments. It will be longer before I finish it. I had to up the tempo to get the melody to mesh properly with it. I plan on making more complex songs soon.
I just wish I was finishing this song under different circumstances... I'm not going to let my emotions change the song from how it is supposed to be a shanty. It is one that I just need to get out of my system (like another song "Heart of Frost and Ice"), and complete and never come back to... Kinda like how some things turned out in life... Check out my LJ (http://khyle.livejournal.com/435568.html#cutid1) for more information on that. Back on subject though... Just wish things had turned out better in regards to pirates. Never coming to port and staying for good... In some ways it'll be like closing one chapter in my life... It isn't the end of the story though, for the pirate or the vagabond. There's plenty of music still left to write like life left to live.
This isn't a Valentine's song or post or anything of that nature. It's just coincidence because I recently had some inspiration about trying out a particular melody to the background and it works and I wanted to post it. So I guess it was a good thing I hadn't "finished" the previous pirate song I was working on and it has now become THIS song now. I can't wait to properly finish this song.
It's kind of my theme song for someone who is still very dear to me
calgor. This song is for you captain.

I think he would be well pleased with this song. The faster tempo definitely helps keep it moving. I like how the melody and countermelody blend together.
Aside from the technical recommendations I gave you earlier regarding envelope and reverb for the melodic instrument, you might try rolling the chords more on the beats of the countermelody (the harpsichord sound you have going) so that you get more of the notes.
I can actually hear this in my head with a proper fiddle playing the melody. I can also hear a tambourine in my head keeping a beat. :)
