Mind you, I can read it a heck of a lot better than trying to speak or write or understand spoken French XD .... I just don't have anyone on the west coast here to speak it with constantly and lost a lot of what I had >.=.<

I recognize the verb conjugation for "to lose" and I find it intriguing that it's used as "forget" there :D .... I suppose the perk of living in Canada is that everything I could buy has both English and French on the label, so, once I was bored reading the English on the cereal boxes, I'd start reading the French and compare the two. That accounts for my better ability to read it XD

Also, I've been playing one of my Pokemon games in French to help it along :)

Games could help learning bits of a foreign language, but it won't help much if you have no idea of what you're reading :P

It helps greatly to have someone who can challenge you and fix mistakes you make. The more I look at other languages, the more I see root words that are similar to English words. Regarder for example.
Google Translate is also handy for nouns, but I wouldn't trust it for getting complete sentences right XD

French doesn't translate well into english and vice versa even thought many words are shared or have a common origin (the normans french did influence the english language after all)

Personally, I like "A language loses itself without training" better than "you can forget a language without training" (just to borrow your previous phrase. No disrespect meant). I think it sounds so much more like something a sage or wise man might say XD ....

English has so many extra words that sometimes I have trouble expressing myself with them because each has a slightly different meaning. That and my brain tends to enjoy rambling on and on in loops wanting to covering everything so there is no confusion and instead had the opposite effect XD

I can see the extra words being part of the reason the two languages don't translate into each other well.

It's more how the languages are constructed and cultural stuff. French is a latin/romance language while english is a germanic language.

Now that I find really cool and interesting. Learning more about the roots of a language and how it's constructed ...

In high school is was, "Here's a second language you are required to learn in Grade 8. It's called French. Memorize these verbs and expect to regurgitate them back on a quiz. What's that? Oh, you can drop it for grade 9, but don't expect to be able to graduate without a language course completed at Grade 11 level." .... needless to say it wasn't fun .... mind you, I was the only one in my grade 10 French class who knew the numbers up to at least a thousand XD

I think discussing the language with someone who grew up with it as their first language is a much more productive way to learn.
