He was story editor on Season 5. And while that was a very good season, I doubt the show will "go down hill" with his departure. In fact, most of the Season 6 episodes have been very good so far.
As for Larson, I believe he left to pursue other projects, including a possible film adaptation of his novel, Pennyroyal Academy.
