This is my kangaroo fursuit. He is the first mascot headed fursuit that I finished. Donkey v2 was started first, but I had no idea how to make the head and wanted Donkey to look right, so, I made Roo to figure out how to make a mascot head. After I finished Roo, I would use what I learned from him to finish up Donkey.
I made Roo and Donkey after I had found Furry. Before I found furry, I was making fursuits but instead of mascot heads I used hoods with rubber animal noses.

Mascot costumes have over sized heads and simple markings and colors, usually, so they can be seen at arenas and football fields at distances of 130 yards or 400 feet. Fursuits are viewed at distances of 20 yards or 60 feet or less and usually have smaller heads and greater detailing.
Examples of mascot suits can be found at Marylens and Folkmanis (spelling) web sites.

That is not true. A mascot can be just about anything. A lot of schools have very basic costumes for their mascot since the school has next to nothing in their budget for a costume if anything at all. I have seen some high school mascot photos that looked like the person that wears the school's mascot costume made it them self's because the school most likely had no money in their budget for a costume.
When I was in high school we did not have a mascot costume because the old one was in such bad condition it was forced to be retired years before I went to the school. A new one was bought years after I graduated because they where able to come up with money to buy one. I would not be surprised if the student body its self was who came up with the money to buy the school the costume.

I was talking about the physical size of mascot suits verses fur suits. Whether or not a school should adopt a mascot or can afford a costume is another thing all together. With budget cuts and short staffing decimating extra activities, a mascot becomes a luxury a school can no longer afford.
A mascot is something considered to bring good luck. Hood ornaments on automobiles were called mascots. I especially like the leaping feline on Jaguar autos. On TV, I saw a museum that had a collection of hood ornaments that was outstanding.
Years ago, on a talk show, a group of KKK followers were espousing their views. One of the followers was dressed in an alligator costume, a good looking suit except for the KKK worked into the chest. The host asked the alligator to remove the head so his face could be seen but a follower said that the gator was in character and could not reveal his true identity. I wondered how they knew that, it was troubling to me.
