Donkeys and zebras are more closely related to each other
than either are to horses. And no other creature made this
point better than the quagga, which had visual attributes of
both. It was an exceedingly beautiful animal that is unfortunately
now extinct - because human beings are idiotic creatures, as
a whole. The last known quagga died in the Amsterdam Zoo,
August 12, 1883.
I know that there are programs operating to "bring back" the quagga
by selective breeding with zebras, but this will produce merely zebras
without stripes :P The quagga is gone. Anyway, hence the slight loopy
50's mad science/sci-fi vibe here, imagine a wavery Mars Attacks
theramin in the background. Also, the N.E.R.D. allusion.

I have to correct your info sorry, but Quaggas were genetically just a color variation of plains zebra that were classified as a sub-species. Plain Zebras in the southern part of their range already have partially unstriped off colored hindquarters and breeding these together would eventually bring the Quagga back.
So actually they are just "Zebras without stripes" and no they are not wholly gone.
Now that thats out of my system I have to say I actually really like this picture, the composition is classy and it reminds me vaguely of the vitruvian man... except ya know with a quagga and no dangly bits.

Thank you for those links. I had found most of them but not the Quagga project. I use Quagga based cheractors in a book set in North Africa of the late 14th century. I know this was outside their confirmed range but they were described by Roman scholars. It is a fantasy but I wanted a species that occurred in herds and north of the Shat-ell and was a bit independent in nature. Zebra of all stripes are very hard to tame.
They will not show up until the next book but will play a promanate role in that book.
