Yes, you heard that right. They are one and the same.
Originally when I started out with my zebras, I had two siblings, Alec and Alexis. They were both proficient in shamanistic magic and able to shape flesh like clay. Thus they were both able to change their own or other's genders at will.
Over time, they merged into the same person, so now I only have Alec, but in many different incarnations and genders.
