On the positive.
See animals that are endangered. See animals that do not live in your land. See animals outside of the television and books. Support efforts to save endangered species.
On the negative.
Him. In a concrete cage about the size of a typical suburban house. For the rest of his life.
I'm as guilty as any. I go there. I look. But it never makes me happy. And I go take my photos and we all go oooh and aaah and think isn't he lovely and isn't he so cute and I want to cuddle him and when I figure out how to change my shape I'm going to be just like him.
Walking around in small circles over a glass lined pond of stagnant water where everything is the same each and every day and the stink of your own dirt assaults your nostrils ...
Enjoy it. This is about as emo as I can manage.

I hate bad zoos, and unfortunately there are many of them. But I've also been to ones that are nothing like what you describe. Keeping animals in zoos isn't an ideal situation even with the best of care, but I also can't overlook the good that's been done by the best zoos in the world, and the people who have dedicated themselves to giving those animals the best life possible in captivity (and whose research has benefited so many species in the wild).
Then again, I'm used to being one of the seeming minority in the fandom who aren't actively against zoos, so...

Don't get me wrong. I did say allude to it being a bastion against extinction in my header, and it would be wholly wrong of me to think otherwise. Take the Panda, for example.
You are spot on in saying that my ire should be vented against bad zoos. For example, my wolf photos are all taken in the National Park in Bavaria, and being there is a joy. Is it a zoo? Assuredly. The animals are contained and managed by people. Unfortunately, my blood boils at the bad zoos, or places that offend my sensibilities.
The good ones should really be cherished. I stand corrected.
