Continuing my latest 'sweeps month' (May, 2016), I have another (belated) "Throwback Thursday" offering from a recent trip to the Sawgrass Nature Center in Coral Springs, Florida (as part of their "Be Kind To Animals" Sunday presentation - where the admission is free, but donations for the park [and their animal hospital] are gratefully accepted)...
This was the first time my brother Glenn and I visited this animal refuge, where all sorts of critters had been rescued. (Lately, some of the newer mammals in the hospital [which we are NOT allowed to visit] included raccoons, opossums, and squirrels - according to a status chart in the lobby of the park center.) The park ranger told us about some of the other fauna (safely kept in outdoor enclosures), which we were allowed to view...
Among the caged animals were some rare birds, very large turtles and tortoises, all sorts of alligators, and a small variety of mammals. Two such mammals in captivity were a pair of raccoons, which usually stayed secluded in a wooden shack inside their cage; but, on this occasion, the nocturnal duo came out in the midday sun for a brief moment. Glenn took that golden opportunity to capture them with the digital camera feature of his smartphone...
Under most circumstances, seeing a raccoon wouldn't be such a big deal... unless you saw how large the bigger of the twosome was! Compared to the raccoon on the top of the stairs of his Margate condo, Glenn took a picture of last year - https://www.furaffinity.net/view/16156346/ - that kit was a 'puppy', while the one we saw last week was full-grown (and as large as a badger)! But it was the other raccoon that truly caught my attention. Unlike others of its ilk (possessing brownish-grey fur) this one was a 'blonde' (according to the ranger) having light yellowish-brown fur! Anyway, the two raccoons sniffed around their enclosure for a few minutes, before returning to the sanctuary (and shade) of the wooden shack...
I'll have one more snapshot (by Glenn) of another mammalian resident of Sawgrass Nature Center, real soon.
