I think that graininess is IRay being stopped before the render was 'done'. (seen it in my attempts.)
(Of course if you're trying for that 'old film' look, it works.)
I was playing with settings to see if I could get better results and found the 3Delight was about ten times faster with 'Progressive Rendering' turned off.
