He didn’t know why she stood next to him on the U-Bahn. She was a chubby black teenager; around 5’6 and 160 pounds. Her face was beaming with confidence as she stood with her hand on her extended hip, listening to music with her earbuds and mouthing the words.
The boy continued to stand next to her. He was the same height and build as the girl, except he was white. He continued to look nervously around and tried not to look directly at the girl's face. She caught on quickly and turned towards the boy.
“Hey! You okay?” She asked a bit bluntly. “Your face is bright red.”
The boy’s face grew a brighter red. “Uhhhhhhhh, it’s nothing…” He said softly to himself.
She stepped closer to the boy. “Come on, be honest. What, haven’t you seen a chubby girl like myself?”
He looked up at her and shook his head. “I-I-I-it’s not that…” He mumbled. “It’s just…”
“It’s just what?” She pushed.
The intercom on the U-Bahn came up, stating the location. The boy pulled out a piece of paper, wrote on it, folded it, and gave it to the girl. “S-s-s-sorry…” He said, quickly rushing off the stopped train.
She cocked her head at the piece of paper, confused of what the boy gave her. She unfolded the paper and gawked. It had the boy’s name and number. “Robin…” She said to herself. She folded the paper back up and placed it into her pocket, and turned up her music louder.
He liked me, I feel like such a cretino, she thought to herself.
At her stop, she walked out and headed directly to her hotel. After the long day the girl had, discovering the city around her, she was ready to decompress. However, the boy from earlier was still in her head. She got to her bed and pulled out the paper from her pocket.
“I should apologize to him…” She mumbled to herself, taking out her phone and dialing the number on the slip.
Ring…
Ring…
Ring…
“Robin, Guten Tag.” The boy responded. “Wer ist das?”
“Uh, is this the boy from the train?” The girl asked.
He didn’t respond right away.
“Hello?” She asked again.
“Yes it is…” He said with a nervous tone.
“Ah, good. I wanted to say I was sorry for the way I acted earlier.” She apologized.
“It’s okay, I acted inappropriately.” He explained. “It’s just, I thought you were pretty.”
The girls face grew warm. “Well, thank you for the compliment. However I’m just, you know, grassoccio…”
“I like it.” He stated. “Your body was the first thing that attracted me to you.”
Her face grew hotter. “Well I’m flattered by wha… Wait you understand Italian?”
“A bit. I started learning it after I saw an amazing girl on TV perform.” He swooned. “Her name is Destiny.”
“Was she from Malta?” The girl’s lips curled into a smile.
“Yea actually, how did you know?” He asked curiously
“I think you’re talking about me.”
Robin’s voice went higher. “You’re Destiny, the girl from Eurovision?!”
She nodded with her phone close to her ear. “Yea, I’m Destiny Chukunyere.”
Destiny heard laughter from Robin. “I cannot believe I met the girl of my dreams today, this can’t be real!” He exclaimed.
“Well… I’m here aren’t I?” She giggled.
“Ahhhhh, this is so great!”
Destiny had what seemed like a permanent smile plastered to her face. She never thought that she would have a boy crush on her that much.
“So… How long are you here for?” Robin inquired
“I go home in two days.” Destiny said. “Back to good ol Malta.”
“Ah, well I hope you enjoyed your time here.” He said.
“Yea, Germany is a cool place. Essen is a fun city too.” She said, reclining onto her bed.
“Absolutely! So many different charms and cool things are here.”
Suddenly an idea popped into Destiny’s head. “So! Are you doing anything this evening?”
“Other than talking to you, nothing. Why?” Robin asked.
“Well, wanna go out for a bit tonight?” She suggested. “I mean I owe it to you after this train situation.”
“Ah! With me? I’d love to! Where do you want to meet me? And at what time?”
She thought of a good place. “Meet me at Hirschlandplatz in an hour. Okay?”
“You got it! I gotta get ready then, I’ll you there!” Robin giggled.
“Alright, see you there Robin.” Destiny smiled and hung up the phone.
I’m actually going on a date, she thought. Who would’ve guessed it.
She got up from her bed and grabbed her suitcase. Inside was a dark blue dress and a pair of black heels. She took both of those things and put them on. As she checked herself out in the mirror, her phone lit up.
“Hey Destiny, it’s me Robin. I found a good restaurant by the platz. It’ll be my treat.” Destiny giggled as she read the text out loud.
She walked into the bathroom to do her makeup. She went for the plain look, adding a simple base and some lipstick. In her opinion, she was ready for the date. So in the meantime, she crashed on the couch and watched German TV.
“This is so weird…” She said, not understanding a word of what they were saying.
Time went by, and soon enough she only had 15 minutes to get to the platz.
“Merda!” She yelled, jumping from the bed and grabbing her bag. She ran out of the hotel and to the U-Bahn station, buying the ticket and quickly rushing to the platz. I’ll be early, but that’s okay. Germans like that, right? She thought to herself.
Destiny arrived at Hirschlandplatz quickly, and low and behold Robin was already there. He wore a plaid shirt that fit around his belly and black pants. His hair was combed and he smiled all while holding a rose. She blushed at the sight of him. Oh my god he’s adorable! She exclaimed in her head.
She walked up to Robin and smiled. “Hello you cutie.” She grinned at him.
“H-h-hallo Destiny!” Robin stuttered. “I-I-I-I brought this for you.” He gave her the flower.
Destiny wrapped her fingers around the stem and brought it up to her nose. “Mmm, it smells amazing. Thank you Robin.”
He puffed out his chest with pride. “You’re welcome” He said with a prideful tone.
“So what about this restaurant you talked about?” She asked him.
“Oh it’s right over there.” He pointed to a group of buildings. “It’s called L’Opera.”
“Ah, sounds neat.”
He stuck out his arm. “Well shall we go then?” He smiled wide.
“We shall!” I held onto his arm and walked towards the restaurant.
There were other couples out that evening, practically walking the same way. They giggled, chattered, and looked at each other lovingly. It was probably the best atmosphere for them to be around
The restaurant's ambiance a bit dark and moody, perfect for a date. A waitress led them to a small table, set two menus out, and walked away. Destiny picked it up and started to read through all the choices.
“So anything tickling your fancy?” Robin asked, already making his decision.
“Well…” Destiny had the issue of not being able to understand anything on the menu. “What do you recommend?”
“Pasta Bolognese.” He giggled. “It’s one of my favorites!”
“I’ll get that then!” She declared, setting the menu onto the table. “Also, could you order for me as well? My German isn’t that good…”
“Of course, I’ll do it now then.” Robin called over the waitress and placed their orders. Destiny grinned awkwardly, not really understanding anything they’re saying. Once she left, Robin put his elbows on the table and hands on his face, squishing his cheeks. “So, tell me a bit about yourself.” He grinned.
“Well… I’m a 14 year old girl from Malta. My parents wanted to come to Germany so I could experience a neat culture.”
“Ah that’s interesting! Then where are your parents?”
“They went to Muenster for the day and are coming back later tonight.”
“Oh, do they know you’re gone with me then?” Robin asked with a worried tone.
“It’ll be fine, it’s not like you’re a murderer, and if you were I would’ve already beaten you up!” She pumped her fist and laughed.
“Haha! That’s awesome!” Robin chuckled.
“Yea, well, what about you? Tell me about yourself.” Destiny requested.
“Hmm… Well I’m a 16 year old boy from Germany and I just started going to a Gymnasium. I’m a gamer, nerd, and…” Robin looked around to make sure no one was listening in on their conversation, “A furry…”
“You’re a furry also?” Destiny leaned back in her chair, amazed about what she heard. “I am too. What part of the fandom?”
Robin blushed. “Uh… fat furs…” He covered his face, feeling shameful of admitting that to a girl.
“Get out of town, that’s awesome! I’m a part of it too!” Destiny’s face brightened. “No need to be embarrassed.”
“Oh thank god…” He sighed. “I never would’ve expected you to like it too.”
“Well… I’m not into super obese ones. Just a bit of pudge in the belly and hips. It really brings out the character.” Destiny clarified.
“Oh I know right! They still have a figure and look way cuter too!” Robin agreed.
The waitress came back with their food, both Robin and Destiny had Pasta Bolognese. They both said “danke” and started to eat, talking about their favorite artists and pics in between bites. This continued after their meal, as they were swapping their favorite pics with each other at the table. It wasn’t until Robin looked at the clock on his phone when he realized he had to go home.
“Sorry about this Destiny, but it’s getting late.” He said, showing her the clock.
“Oh don’t worry about it, I was gonna say something about it also.” She said, putting her phone in her purse and then taking out her wallet.
“Put that away.” Robin politely said “I’m paying for dinner tonight.”
“What? Oh you don’t have to you know.” Destiny said, still holding her wallet.
“I insist.” Robin called over the waitress again, asking for the bill. She read it out, Robin gave her the money, and then he stood up and walked next to Destiny, helping her up.
“What a gentleman.” She giggled, holding his hand as they walked out of the restaurant.
They continued to walk like that after they left the restaurant, looking at architecture, statues, and other pretty sites on the way to the U-Bahn Station. Every so often, the two of them would look at each other and smile, happy to walk around with each other
Eventually they ended up the platform where they had to leave each other. They both looked at each other, Robin giving Destiny a firm hug.
“Robin…” Destiny muttered, hugging him back.
Robin pulled off and smiled. “Thank you for giving me the best day in my life.”
“Well, thank you for giving me the best day as well.” She smiled back at him.
“Aw, well it was my pleasure to make a girl like you happy.”
Destiny had a warm feeling inside her. She didn’t expect anything like this to happen on her trip to Germany, but she was glad it did. They both heard the trains coming, and as they came closer Destiny moved close and kissed Robin on the lips. He was shocked at first, but went with it after the first five seconds.
“Destiny…” Robin mumbled, pulling away.
“Yes Robin?” She smiled at him.
“Thank you so much for everything.” He said, grinning and tearing up at her.
“It’s all my pleasure Robin.” She continued to smile, hugging him tight again. “And now we have to go…”
“Yea…” Robin sighed, looking sad.
“But hey, I’ll come back.” Destiny winked at him.
“Please do!” Robin said excitedly. “Or maybe I’ll go by you.”
“I’d love it.” She said.
Both of them hugged again, holding each other in a tight embrace. Then they turned and got onto their respective trains, returning to their respective homes, reflecting on their amazing nights, and thinking about the next time they see each other again.
Anyway, this is for you bud. Enjoy.
