Yes and no, I change how I do things and at what point all the time, usually I do it after. For recommendation, I find with general cartoon work it doesn't really matter since it'll look the same in the end, I just like doing it first right now. (I use layers, so the flats/shading are on their own layer, so doesn't matter when it's done!). If you're digitally painting on the flat files, then you'd need the colour first usually, but even then there's no real rules to it.

Oooh okay O: one more quick question, sorry, how do you make it so she looks like she's sitting on the wall?

I can't really answer that one since I didn't do something specific or have a trick for it. Do you have an example for how it doesn't look she's sitting on the wall?

I think it looks fine, it probably looks different to you then mine because we did the legs at a different angle, like her legs are more going downwards.
If you want the legs straight on, the knees are cover up the waist/upper thighs a lot like in my image.

All of my commissioners get poses to pick from unless there's absolutely no alternatives I can do if they were very, very specific on it.
(This excludes icons and reference sheets as it's different)

But otherwise, it depends on the commission. I don't like full freedom, instead I like guidelines or information about the character.

I was told: The pose/theme is totally up to you! In general she's silly and bubbly, often very sleepy, obsessed with x-files and the show 'Archer', her biggest hobby/passion is collecting anime figurines and pokemon toys, she's kind of anxious, and carries a big Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 tablet and her pink headphones everywhere. For TV watching!
So I can up with poses fitting the character.
So for that commission, I was given multiple things I could think about.

I was told they wanted the one character hugging the other, so I can come up with different angles and poses and intensity of the hug since she could fly.

It's not the main reason I do it but definitely one of them, most people love having the option and it makes the whole process more fun for them :3
