Deuterium ! WEH.
06:00:
Zano called his chief scientist into his command center. As usual, Deuterium showed up right at the turn of the hour.
“You know why I called you in here?”, Zano muttered.
“Uh, yeah whats up?”, Deuterium seemed unaware of what was wrong but clearly took the tone of voice.
“Take a look and tell me what went wrong.” Zano clicked on the monitor with the UNN channel dialed in, and flipped on the tactical hologram- the focus was the wreckage of the Battlecruiser ‘Alamo II’, and more importantly the 10 kilometer wide crater it left upon detonation.
“Fourteen post-human technicians and forty of my finer Zerg troopers just got a one-way particle accelerator ride to hell. You wanna tell me why the Fusion Core was active?”, Zano practically growled out the sentence.
Deuterium frowned. “I… I tried to see if we could salvage the Fusion Core and repair the ship. I left the project overnight for work while I was looking for schematics…”
Zano gazed directly into the smaller, now clearly more frightened post-human. “Not only did you not listen to me about pulling the core from its housing so we could salvage it safely, but you also left a crew overnight huddled around a ticking nuclear bomb. This not only violates our agreement, but it also has cost us irreplaceable personnel and has resulted in a gross loss at the bear minimum. If I didn’t desperately need you, you’d be dead where you stand.”
Deuterium clammed up, waiting for the scathing tirade to conclude.
“See this crater isn’t technically your fault, the Terrans were on a seek-and-destroy mission to keep us from obtaining the technology- but had your team extracted the core we’d still have it and the Terrans would be forced to accept that we would eventually work out how to repair it. Why the hell did you leave it in?”
Deuterium swallowed deeply, then spoke shakily, “At first, it seemed that we could simply extract the core and move it, but as I studied it more intently, there were fail safes installed in the core’s housing that would have detonated the core. We would have needed to excavate the entire eighteen square stories of decking from the wreckage…”
Zano groaned. “You withheld this information why?”
Deuterium looked at his feet. “I was caught up in my work, we were so close…”
Zano sighed. “Dismissed. Get out of my sight for a few hours, I need to reassess our power situation.”
Deuterium turned, hitting the room’s bulkhead. He looked up, back at Zano, “I’m sorry boss, I had no idea this’d happen.”
Zano just turned his back, staring out the command center’s window. “I didn’t either. Terrans don’t normally fight this hard to preserve their tech. Now go, I’ll need to speak with Occam on how to obtain a new one.”
