Well, the curse is linked to the other Mummy in the gallery.
They were to wed and merge each other's kingdoms. She had always been the jealous lot, and he was inside anything that was warm. So she placed a curse spell over him which lead to his demise.
As a reaction to this the Pharaoh of the other kingdom sent for her capture resulting in a great war, ending with Khaktese getting captured and buried alive, never to know rest, relief, or pleasure. Her tomb was sealed with a magical ward which locked her inside for eternity. The curse would be lifted provided that she release the Prince from his spell. However that would require that both mummies are in the same tomb... Which can't exactly happen due to the seal she placed upon his tomb.
