That's clever, and totally possible! I see 2 seams on the helical part. 1 on the innerside and 1 on the outerside. Reinforcing one of these seams with an durable strip of nonstretchy fabric would change the tail's response to inner pressure (i.e. whenever the fox is hugged.) If you reinforce the outerside, the tail will uncurl outwards whenever the fox is hugged, then hug you again whenever you let go of the fox. If you reinforce the innerside, the tail will curl inwards whenever the fox is hugged, then uncurl again whenever you let go.
