This is a piece for the Endangered Ark card deck (http://endangeredark.com), being organized by
foxfeather
The deck features a bunch of different artists and a variety of endangered species, and a portion of the deck's proceeds will be donated to charities dedicated to helping endangered wildlife.
And, for those interested, there's some photos of the painting process, over yonder.

Actually, I don't use flat (aka bright) brushes. I use Winsor&Newton Series 7 round sables for the watercolor washes and then cheap size 4/0 (very small) round brushes (I go through about 1-2 per painting) and I paint the hairs in the fur individually (which is fairly easy to do, just time consuming.) I also use a large badger hair fan brush for large sky washes to blend colors, but that's about all I use, brush-wise. :]
Here you can see I'm using a small round brush to detail the fur:

Here I am using a cheap flat brush (the neon green handled one) for the sky wash, because I didn't want to damage my large watercolor round brushes:

When the sky was complete, I switch back to my regular round brushes.

When I was a little kid people would as what I wanted to be when I grew up and I would proudly respond:
"I want to be a biologist and move to Africa to help widen cheetahs gene pools and save them from genetic bottlenecking!"
Then I took an honors Bio course and was all "Fuck that!"
So now I'm a crappy freelance journalists and have saved zero cheetahs.
Also, I like this piece. :)

It is great to hear that you're helping such a good cause!
I love your ability to paint such great pictures without any digital help. You are a real artist!
I couldn't help to notice you use references. This is great. This way you give more realism to the image. I loved that cheetah's eyes, by the way. They seem distant and dreamy, they kind of conducted me into that world of hers.. they are deep. Great work with the paws also, they look beautiful!

Wow, you really do not know how much I am amazed at this work.
It's so very lifelike and the colors are stunning. The anatomy is also striking and the whole peice is very warm and incredible.
It serves the cheetahs well; they're such beautiful creatures.
Favourited for sure; keep up the amazing work!

This is one of the most superb pieces of artwork I have ever seen!!
The detail is amazing! The fur looks more realistic then a Pixar or Disney movie! You've paid so much attention to the little things (the overlaying fur on the spot, the cracks in the rock, the grass and tree). This must have taken ages to do. It looks better then a photo of a real cheetah!! I can't sing you praises enough. Just fanatstic!!
