(I assume a society what doesn't employ shoes wouldn't throw/spit/discard icky stuff onto the pavement. some humans are disgusting in that regard... bus stops around here look like trash heaps, and when they fixed the main streets around a block of houses around my place they also fixed the walkways with nice, yellowish concrete stones. and dog owners let their pets defecate right into the middle of the walkways... ugh. I hope one or another of them slipped on it.)
