Very very nice, that's a good pick up. I have a special interest in World War I, so this really got my attention. I notice the puttee's he has on, certainly a different colour (research done literally just then has informed me on the Blue Puttees of New Foundland). I actually own my Great-Grandfather's leather gaiters that he wore during WWI when he fought at the Battle of the Somme. Interesting fact on my Great-Grandfather's gaiters, they replaced the puttees because (apart from the ease of putting them on) the puttees contributed to trench foot as when they got wet they stayed wet. So any WWI vets missing their leg below the knee likely lost it due to the trench foot caused by the puttees.
On my Great-Grandfather, he got wounded in action from a mustard gas attacked, and as a result of the lung damage he slept outside for the rest of his life in a special bungalow he built. Apparently as well one of the last thing's he ever said before he died was that he could still see the face of the first man he stabbed to death with a bayonet...yeah heavy I know. Though we did find out some very...lets say, interesting facts when we found his discharge papers recently
Also, wow to the previous post and comment that almost an entire generation from Newfoundland nearly got wiped out. That's just incredible.

It was described as "The worst sin perpitraited on a soldier." and was responsible for the Canadians being feared on the battlefield as needlessly brutal savages. Since the rifle was prone to failure, jamming, a short range, over standard weight for a weapon of it's type and so on the Canadian soldiers would go across no mans land and attack the Germans using the rifles as clubs so they could get the K98 rifles they were using.
Wow, that is quite brutal. I did read that they were known for problems and how most Canadians would wait for Brits to die so that they could get the British guns. Makes me think of the Russian problem in WWI where they didn't have enough guns, so they went in unarmed and waited for a comrade to die to get a rifle.
Yeah well the Russian problem went on into WW2 as well. As for the Canadian issue, eventually one general bought SMLE rifles to equip his own divisions with and made a big deal about it so that the government was forced to do the same for the rest of the troops just to save face.
