My latest study is on one of my favorite sauropods, amargasaurus! I always found them so interesting looking, especially their vertebral spines on their neck. Now I know there are many theories are out there, but the one I believe seems the most realistic and what i'm going with in this study is that the vertebral spines were like spikes used as defense and display. The spines were possibly covered in keratinous sheaths, very much like the horns you see on bovids. Plus their neck was capable of bending pretty far down, allowing it to display or use it's spines as a defense. The sail theory I think makes a pretty concept, but it wouldn't be practical. The skin attached to each spine would limit it's neck movement drastically. So when it comes to the sail vs. defensive spine theory i'm going with the defensive spines. Skeleton done in Prismacolor markers, white pen, and colored pencils. Labels done in Illustrator.
