"Skip" Marouche: Concept Sketches #1
First, a little backstory.
I had a dream a few nights ago. Skip here is the owner of a decommissioned intergalactic starcruiser, named the Vexxon. He used to be an Ensign in the Deepspace Navy, but never got to live his dream of being a true battleship Captain. This has left him mildly bitter and resentful of others' successes, but he knows the true value of teamwork and what needs to be done. He now works fulltime ferrying water from the oceans of a Jupiter-sized tropical planet Juron to other worlds in the system. It's a government kickback job that he resents, but realizes that it's vital for the stability of the populated worlds here. His impatience is renowned amongst the four person crew of the Vexxon, but they still respect his quick thinking and decisiveness. His biggest joy in life is his younger sister Patricia, whom he has called 'Trish' for most of their lives. She is the Vexxon's pilot, and their only direct communication with the outside world. Not only is she Skip's last remaining family member, but she's the only person capable of interfacing with the ship's computer, Glori/OS. Skip keeps his ship relatively clean, but with only four people ona ship spanning two and a half miles carrying nothing in its hold but water and a desalinization plant, things tend to fall into disuse that even the ship's computers can't fully control. He trusts his other two crewmates to get things done and fixed up before he manages to catch thm. His stern nature and military background keep the ship and cew in shape, and keep the water flowing in his star system. He is proud to be the captain of his own ship now, even if it isn't exactly what he bargained for. He's most proud that he's providing life-giving water to the people he once protected.
In my particular dream, Skip's ship is remotely hijacked by unknown forces, and in disabling the ship's computer, they effectively disable Patricia to the mentality of a three year old. Infuriated, Skip vows to save his crew at all costs and determine just what is going on.
It was so vivid, so intense, and so >out of the ordinary< for me to remember a dream, that I knew I had to try and take it from essence to material form. It just so happened that my Animation teacher has asked us to come up with a character to possibly animate in the near future. Thus, I chose Skip.
If things work out, I may have to translate the dream into a decent Flash movie...
