When he was young, Pongo grew up with his merchant family. While the tribeless lifestyle proved to be a difficult and lonely one, it did carry the benefit of being able to trade between all the tribes equally. And it was through this lifestyle that Pongo met Ferris. The two became fast friends and Ferris would often be the first one to greet him when they came to trade with her tribe. As time went, Pongo developed feelings for Ferris that went beyond friendship. He never spoke these feelings to her, feeling himself unworthy given his tribeless upbringing and further strengthened when she was chosen to be her tribe's ambassador to their dragon warden. He eventually left the life of the traveling merchant to pursue education in the city, determined to master each of the arcane schools so he may one day return to Ferris, worthy in both his eyes and her's.
