after stealing a supposed relic of the Hengeyokai... these two decide to test it out and see if there's any truth to the stories...
Not surprisingly... there is! The potent magic of the urn is transferred through their incense sticks and they rapidly find their human bodies giving way to new forms that will place them among the hengeyokai ranks as well.
they decide an escape would be prudent, since they can do nothing more if they're caught with the relic...

Technically the race is called "Hengyaoji" in this setting, but really, they are like the Hengeyokai anyway. XD The place they were "Born" is even called the Henge, too. XD (artifacts that granted sentience to common animals to make them less "Flawed", and which can completely rewrite one's "nature".)
Cept there aren't any avians - the avians in the setting this artifact comes from are their own race.

This. My current 'sona species. Sometimes I wond r if I'm the only one in the fandom...
So they think.
The specific incense burner was used to give things a "nature" - specifically the creation of the Hengyaoji (Hengeyokai) from animals who had only a primitive nature of "Eat, reproduce, live" rather than the more complex natures that the "Flawed ones" have. It can also be used to completely rewrite someone's identity.
