It was a cold evening in autumn at Buckingham Palace, official residence of the President of the British Republic and the beating heart of the Empire. As the sun began to slip from the sky the Vulpine guards took up their positions, ready to defend the Leader if necessary. The polished and silvered Lee Enfield rifles, carried for looks rather than practicality, glimmered in the fading sun as the guards marched into sentry positions. The weather report on the National Programme said tonight would be the coldest of the year, and a young Vulpine sentry, Tenacious Barlow, wished he was able to wear a thick jumper under his uniform, but the honour of protecting the hopes and dreams of a nation would have to suffice to guard against the bitter chill.
