Hey noodle what did you do today?
Well after waking early in the morning (about 7 AM) it felt very cold. I could not find my warm-pants, so stayed in my mummy bag until my jeep-frand found them for me! Suddenly the chilly morning was available to me, and dang, the world was wet! More than that, the dunes were snowy in the distance! I ate a small serving of oatmeal, we packed our stuff, and headed to the dunes!
When we got there we stopped at the gift shop/ranger station. It was neat seeing the station I visited 3 years earlier. We then went to the parking lot and started on our trek. Well, after I put a pair of shorts over my face to protect it. :b
Last time I visited, the dunes were bone-dry, sand-blasting affairs that rubbed your skin raw with the sheer piercing force of each tiny grain. This time the snow coated nearly every inch of the dunes, and kept the sand-blasting down to a minimum. However the snow-melt also caused a thick creek to form; roughly a football-field wide but only an inch deep at most portions. Interestingly enough this creek also had tiny inch-high waves wash across itself due to the way the snow upstream was melting. At one point I figured that my best option was to remove my shoes and run across the creek.
Man, it was cold! Brrrr! But eventually my frands came across the creek and we started our hike.
The thing about Sand Dunes National Park is that these dunes are extremely high above sea level (8000+ feet), and oxygen is not as easy to come by. Furthermore, it's sand, so you step forward a foot and sink back 8 inches.
Three of us got to the top of High Dune, and turned back. The other three continued up Star Dune. Now, despite not going up to the top of Star Dune, this was a big accomplishment for me. 3 Years earlier I failed to crest a dune because of altitude sickness, sudden thunderstorms, and then actual sickness. This time I made it to the top of one...I FELT ACCOMPLISHED!
Those of us who went back crossed the now-deeper creek, but the water was warm! Well, in the 40s or 50s I'd say. We changed into warm dry clothes, ate some hardy snacks, and took a nap. The snow by now was mostly melted, but still bright enough it was practically blinding!
When the other frands returned, we all went to a diner at the park and ate some super tasty food! I got a French Dip (2nd on the trip!), and all of us but our host ordered a slice of tasty pie! So. Much. FOOD!
We then drove back to Colorado Springs and got some food from the Walmart and returned to our host's house. FPS-Frand and I watched and ridiculed a TV show about Alaska people, before putting on the first Harry Potter movie. We ate some homemade burritos and watched the first and third Harry Potter movies, while talking constantly about that universe's lore and what should have happened and all sort of things, and it was loads of fun! We went to sleep around midnight.
I hope everyone has an accomplished day! <333
