This story was based on a dream. I don't remember my dreams that often, but every now and then I recall one that is a coherent tale, and this is one such. It's altered a good bit from the dream, to add details and to fill in some plot holes that dream logic ignores, but it's largely the same story.
It features mostly humans, but our hero is part cat, and our villain is a kind of vampire. What is is about? Well, it's about magic and mages. It's about slavery and freedom, but mostly it's about a father, and a son, and how the father's expectations have shaped his son's life.
Oh, and there are slaver pirates. Because, you know, everything is better with pirates in. Just a cameo though, it's not a pirate story.

I can feel his heart thumping in his chest, and my hands feel week. That was a great story! Took 40 minutes to read (and 20 minutes to figure out my taking 40 minutes to read from Firefox's SQL database (and another 10 copy-pasting this paragraph from IRC, haha)). It was like an emotional roller-coaster, with highs and lows... and a climax in the middle of the story of all places, but still a helluva journey!
