From what i understood from the history boards at the car park the general heaths with the hills were used as a WW2 firing range for snipers and general riflemen, i'm guessing the larger hill at the end might have been for artillery *shrugs* not a clue though but looked nice with the contrasting colours of the sky from left to right :)
