Why is this not in my gallery??
This is Eriodictyon tomentosum, and quite possibly, the most important plant I work with. Woolly Yerba Santa is endemic to Central Calfirornia and cannot yet be cultivated.
All the plants of the Eriodictyon genus are endemic to California and can't be easily cultivated, but are highly valued for their medicinal properties. It was used as a remedy for tuberculosis and asthma before Western Medicine became the authority in California. An extract from the plant has potent anti inflammatory properties. I hope I can get it analyzed some day.
Woolly Yerba Santa is furry white, with very pale flowers. Bees love it. The plant spreads through pervasive rhizomes, but transplanting the rhizomes only works occasionally. Old colonies can spread out to a full acre if allowed, and will come back eagerly where the soil is just right. The whole plant gives off a soothing watermelon fragrance that's intoxicating during summer. I'm sad that I can't share the plants, but I do make a nice incense from the ground plant. Biting insects don't like it at all.
