Another one of Chucky's talks with Ian. Is Ian his instructor or his shrink? A little of both actually. Flight instruction is unique and intimate because of its one-on-one nature.

It's always a good idea to go to your professor to see how you're really doing.
I remember a couple of my music professors going on a little tirade on how poorly the class had been doing as a whole. Fearing the worst, I went to the professors in private later on, and learned that I was actually doing decently (if not pretty well). They probably noticed my unease during their tirades and explained that it was usually the students who didn't care to show up every day (on time or at all) and/or sat in and rather than actually paying attention in class they'd be on Facebook on their laptops or something acting as if they already knew what was being taught. Those students tended to cause the whole class average to fall pretty badly. XD
I never had to retake a class due to poor grades. The worst class for me was one on ancient music history. The teacher was a notoriously hard grader (thought to be that way even among their colleagues), but I managed to escape that class with a grade well enough that I wouldn't have to retake it. A handful of my friends weren't so lucky.
I did very well on following classes in the history track, probably due to the fact that I was more familiar with the material, but also because the teachers graded a bit more leniently. But I had that teacher again for a specialized class on Beethoven's piano sonatas, and I did MUCH, MUCH better in that.

With a good friend who is a teacher, and a sister who was a teacher, I can say that it's easy for them to remember the bad students more than the good ones. The reason being is that the bad ones tend to stick out and require the constant attention, while the good ones come in and do their work.
