Base banner art used for the Wonderboy III; The Dragon's Trap stream.
Mostly done for the celebration of the recently announced remake (see trailer here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ibKf66tVoFw ) but I figure it was also a good time to play through this game and see what design aspects still gel together.
Taken in the context of it's age, it's a remarkably put together game. The art style is bright and vibrant and is probably one of the better looking titles on the Master System. Some thought has been put into several statistics such as 'Charm Points' that were possibly unneeded but at the same time acts as a proper gate to prevent players from grinding Gold to get ALL of the game's equipment once it's in reach. And while each animal form's true potential gets a bit stymied at the end by some not-quite-there pathing and layouts (such as really not really being able to take proper advantage of Lizard-Man's immunity to lava) the thought that went into them is still appreciated.
Playing through this game again may have tempered my expectations for the remake. I think a 1-to-1 reskin of the original would be terribly remiss but I can also hope that they take this opportunity to at least upgrade their base environment to better take advantage of the the varied abilities afforded to the player through the transformation mechanic. DuckTales Remastered from before took what was otherwise a large but empty game and gave players proper reason to explore all of the nooks and crannies of the world they made, and I think Dragon's Trap will be made equally amazing if DotEmu and Lizardcube can make proper use of the tools and world pieces given to them and give this oft overlooked series a bit of the spotlight and stand-out game I think it deserves.
(Normally I would list who characters and concepts belong to, but I honestly have NO idea who or what belongs to whoever at this point... I mean, the Wonderboy name belongs to Sega... the base game belongs to the now defunct Westone... and I don't see their names ANYWHERE here... oh well x_x)
