Mind Raider (Entry for SkylandersArtContest)
Yeah, remember her? This is my Skylanders OC Dream Catcher... except now there's an actual character named Dream Catcher, so I changed her name. I drew her up, along with a demonstration of her Dream World form and weapon samples, for the SkylandersArtContest on Instagram. ...Except I don't know how the hell to post pictures onto Instagram without a mobile device, so I might not even enter. But I had fun drawing her, none the less.
Name: Mind Raider
Element: Magic
Class: Sorcerer
Description: A young witch with the power to warp and change people's dreams and thoughts. She usually is called away to help those who have nightmares. She has the power to change bad dreams and thoughts into good dreams and thoughts. But one day she heard word of a nightmare wizard who was going around and giving other people bad dreams. She fought the nightmare wizard through a battle of the mind and came out on top. News of her victory against the nightmare wizard inducted her into the Skylanders, where she can use the dream world to help those in need, and frighten those who wish to do harm.
Basic moves
Attack A: (Dream Staff) She slashes enemies with her staff, also leaves magic in its wake. Press Attack 1, Attack 1, hold Attack 1 for a strong combo attack.
Attack B: (Mind Illusion) She deceives the minds tricking the opponent into seeing multiple Mind Raiders. She can control which of these dummies becomes genuine with the Control Stick. A small enemy who attacks a fake Mind Raider will be stunned. Default is three.
Basic upgrades
1: (Deep Sleep Staff) Mind Raider's staff becomes stronger.
2: (Seeing Triple) Mind Raider illusions can move and do fake attacks.
3: (Welcome to my Nightmare) Using the third attack button enters Mind Raider into the dream world. In the dream world, Mind Raider Is bigger and slightly more monstrous looking. Mind Raider is slower and easier to hit in this world, and will exit the dream world when hit, but she is also more powerful. She can also use a long slashing attack with her tusk-claws using Attack 1. Attack 3 exits the dream world. Pressing the first attack button twice then holding it will give her an absorbing attack where she will grab onto small enemies with her trunk and sap their life till they are defeated. This combo WILL sort-of work on larger enemies, but larger enemies will still be able to move and attack Mind Raider.
4: (Double Play) Press Attack 1, Attack 1, hold Attack 2 to use Double Image, which sends forth an illusion of herself to keep attacking a target for three seconds. Press Attack 1, Attack 1, hold Attack 3 to use Dream Rend to attack surrounding enemies.
"Elephantom" upgrades (Upgrades her Physical World abilities)
1: (Pentaphant) Mind Raider can now summon five dummies.
2: (Sand Elephant Staff)) Mind Raider's staff does maximum damage.
3: (Spell Shock) Illusions attacks now do physical damage.
"Mammoth Mightmare" upgrades (Upgrades her Dream World abilities.)
1: (Let's do the Mind Warp again) Press Attack 2 while in the Dream World to teleport several feet away from her.
2: (Mind Trickery) Press Attack 1, Attack 1, hold Attack 2 while in the Dream World to use Dream Diver, where she will grab a small opponent, then dive down into the ground, causing a huge wave of magic outward. She cannot grab onto large enemies, but will still dive. Press Attack 1, Attack 1, hold Attack 3 while in the Dream World to use Mind Whirl, where she will spin around with her tusk-claws extended and hurt anything in its path.
3: (Someone needs a Manicure) Claw-Tusk slash, will deal maximum damage.
Soul Gem: (Sweet Dreams) Mind Raider will gain 5 HP per second in the dream world.
Mind Raider Pros:
+ Evasive moves in both forms.
+ Fairly good power.
+ Good crowd control, especially on the Mammoth Mightmare path.
+ Soul Gem allows for reliable recovery.
Mind Raider Cons:
- Poor range capabilities. Must fight enemies close up.
- Dream World Mode is big, slow, and easy to hit.
- Somewhat frail HP.
- While she has good crowd control, her crowd control moves are all combo moves, and must set up.
On the left is the main picture. On the right is her dream world form and weapon upgrades.
Info about Mind Raider:
Mind Raider is an African/Indian take on a Japanese monster known as a Baku. The Baku is a creature who has power over dreams, and has the ability to remove and change dreams at will. While Baku are typically depicted as tapir, they are often depicted as elephants as well, much like Mind Raider herself. She started out as a simple OC in 2012 when Giants came out, and was originally called Dream Catcher until a character appeared in Trap Team who was actually named Dream Catcher. I spent several days trying to think of a new name for her for this contest, and came up with several names, including Dream Cleaver (which I felt was too violent of a name), Grand Illusion (which I didn't feel had enough to do with dreams to justify the name) and Mightmare Mode, until eventually coming up with Mind Raider, a play on the term "Mind Reader."
I don't like to disclose too much about myself, but I am a 24 year old man from Wisconsin, and currently going on 25. Skylanders is one of the few games I ever get excited for anymore, as I enjoy the Toys to Life aspect and the ability to use cool creatures like dragons and giant anthro monsters instead of plain ol' human characters. To see Mind Raider in the game would definitely add something to smile about for me in life, and hey, it would be a nice nod to the older Skylanders players out there who feel a bit underrepresented. I hope you consider Mind Reader as a top candidate for the contest. Thank you.
