So I finished a pic for someone and then they decided they no longer wanted it or were prepared to pay for it....gotta admit out of five years working on commissions this is the first time this has actually happened to me so feeling a bit angry about it all considering how much effort and fixing of things I did for this person. After spending so long on all the fine details and such like im not really prepared to let this pic go to waste.
So if anyone would like it its $45 Any character any gender. cub only. if you want to chage some of the nursery colours you can do that too although ideally id only be wanting to change the actual character and leave the rest of the nursery intact.
Comment below if you would like it for $45

You could ask 50% before hand, give a small preview probs "WIP" over it at the end, and then receive the last 50% once is finished, if the commisioner decline and don't want the draw anymore you refund a small percentage of that before hand payment, because make you waste your time on it.
Even when artist doesn't work that way I give the full payment before hand so I don't have to regret o:

The problem is the trust issue we have to deal with. I heard from people that some commissioner didn't get paid and other didn't get there art back. because of this the trust is gone between commissioner and artist. The "get the sketch, pay the money, get the finished picture" I ran into a problem that when two of my commissioner bailed out on the sketch before I get paid. So yeah there a lot of issue going on with transaction. just that we got trust issue here.
I changed the characters appearance slightly and took out their colours so it wasnt obvious who the person was. im not really interested in calling folk out simply because err people would probably be mean to the person and whilst they have left me out of pocket I dont think getting people white knighting for me or anything would improve or fix the situation. I'll be writing an artist beware about them though.
Please post about this to artists_beware or somewhere else, where it is appropriate! It is very important the community will keep together in this kind of a situation.
As an artist, myself I need to know the track record of commissioners, you know? If someone has a reputation of bailing, I know to ask everything up front.

I always like to make sure I pay upfront when requesting a commission, that way we are bound bay a refundable contract if the commission is not completed then the artist should/must refund by law or risk a small claim.
Plus I like to make sure people know Im not a thief and like you I have a massively bad habit of being too trusting hence how I got scammed £250 by paying a "gardener" who knocked on my door to do my garden. 15 Mins later him and his tools were nowhere to be seen. >.<

And that's why, even as a customer (as in, I don't draw, I just buy art), I agree that payments should be made in full before the artist works on it
People might protest "But what if the artist backs out?"
Well, PayPal has a dispute option for that reason, if one doesn't get what they paid for, they can open a dispute.
The reason why I say the commissioner should pay first is because the artist is actually going to work on it, while the commissioner just sits by and waits. No way for the artist to fix things if the commissioner backs out.
Sorry this happened to you.

If this is the first time it's happened in five years, then it doesn't sound like a problem that needs fixing. If your method has worked all the other times, then stick with it. :)
You've lost a payment and some time, but that person's lost the chance of ever getting some art from you. I know who's lost the most in that situation.

He has not paid me a single penny, after approving the sketch then the lineart and then bailing on me at the last minute. He has absolutely no say or hold over any of this. If any of the things in this pic were his characters then I would agree with you but since these are all toys and decorations that could belong to anyone. I came up with the designs on the walls, I came up with the motif on the crib and the toys on the floor. All he asked for was a redwall/pony/watershipdown theme. If he wants the pic he is more than welcome to pay for it. But since ive now blocked him and his most recent vile notes I doubt i'll be hearing from him again.
Lovin' the redwall.
On another note, not only did he refuse to pay, but he was in other ways nasty about it?
