A new digital drawing tool (http://egypt.urnash.com/blog/2016/0.....uys-a-surface/) means revisiting the drawing I did for my last new drawing tool (http://egypt.urnash.com/portfolio/t.....-uenu-chousun/). Which has been replaced a couple of times but it's not like buying a new edition of the same computer a few years later really needs a ceremonial celebration like buying an entirely new form factor running an OS you've never used before does.

Pros: 260ppi display means I can run Illustrator with anti-aliasing off and never see its preview anti-aliasing glitches again. Faster CPU than the Mac Air I've been using the past few years. Intensely portable, I can just pull the Surface and a keyboard (not the stock keyboard cover, as it only works when connected to the screen - I'm using an Apple Bluetooth keyboard, as it's what I'm used to) out of my bag and get drawing on the bus, vs the hassle of pulling out computer, tablet, stylus, and tablet cable, and connecting them. I can't quite draw in a single bus or plane seat yet, but it's a lot closer. And right now its new form factor feels like it's discouraging just sitting around refreshing Twitter and Reddit and whatnot, drawing is more fun.
Cons: Runs Windows. Has some default settings that get in the way of rapid drawing. Stylus tracking is a little loose sometimes, I have to zoom in for small things I feel I could knock out from a lower magnification beforehand. Pricey, I paid about $1600 for a higher-end SP4 with 256g ssd/8gb ram/i7. Battery life is okay but not great. Less storage space than my Air but more than enough for being a device that basically runs one program. Wouldn't want to use it for my only computer though.
Overall I'm pretty happy with it so far despite spending the first day and a half swearing at Windows and figuring out how to make it work more like the Mac I'm used to (see the "new digital drawing tool" link in the description for more on that). But now it's basically a magic sketchbook that runs Illustrator, and that's a thing I like having.
