Just found a mammary tumor on this little nerd. Found one on her sister a couple days ago. They're both close to three years old so I knew I didn't have much time left, but I'm going to miss them both sooo much.

They have it right behind their left front leg. And the sister's has already grown to almost the size of a ping pong ball, and it's actually gotten larger since I first saw it. Loki (pictured) is very friendly and outgoing but her sister Thor (we got them very young so we didn't know they were females) is very reclusive and people shy. I'd hate to have to put them through the trauma of an hour or more car trip to the nearest exotic pet veterinarian.
They should be totally fine for now. Behind the front legs is a pretty common place to get them. As long as they're still getting around and doing their thing, they are A-okay. Also, Loki might actually enjoy a trip to the vet. Every friendly rat I've ever had loved going out in public with me. And even Thor should be okay so long as you let her stay in a box where she can hide c:
I've been doing a lot of reading since we found the tumor on Thor a couple days ago, and we've been giving both of them plenty of fresh carrots and apple slices to keep them healthy and energetic. If worse comes to worse my wife and I have a vet recommended method for home euthanasia, but I pray to the gods they live a full life and pass of their own accord.
I am so sorry. :( I've had Mary Jane; my first rat, develop tumors at 2.5 years and live to be over 3. Then I've recently put down Marley, her tumors popped up overnight and they were pushing on her hip in a matter of weeks.
It really depends on the rat.
Just give her all the love in the world while you have her. ❤

No doubt, I'm going to give them the best life I can regardless of how much time I have with them. They're both about 2.5 years old and they are my first pair of rats. I think they're definitely a pet I want to keep in my life, especially since my cat still has no idea what to think of them lol. I also want my daughter, who is soon to be born, to know that rats aren't something to repulsed by :)
I'm glad, they're truly wonderful animals. I've had rats for nearly 5 years now. Most of my currents are getting old so I know their time is near. But that's okay. They have naturally short lives and as much as the loss hurts I know they shared their lives with me and I gave them the best that I could.
