Essential ReFURance-A Short History of Furry Fandom
It isn't the final word -- other people have other perspecitves on just where it was furry fandom came from. Some people would blame it on the Ancient Egyptians, others on medieval folk tales, some on anime or gaming or Carl Barks. This is what I think. I wrote it, so I got to choose.
It was written quite a while ago though, and published in an early Confurence program book. Don't expect to find out about the origin of Second Life or all about FurAffinity in it.

To me I believe that furries as of todays culture come from many aspects... While yes I do hold a religious value of the past I do also believe that there are many that follows their own path into what is a furry and you follow what you believe in what is furry and even if someone believes it is wrong it maybe the right way for you and you should never be discouraged in whatever you believe.....
I drifted along and made contact with California fandom in '82-83. Don't recall if we ever met, but I was in Brazzle for a while and hung around the SoCal crowd, such as it was, back in the day.
You've got a good even-handed essay, overall, and lacks a lot of the mudslinging that is common in many other attempts I've seen. If there's one thing I'd suggest, it is making a brief note of dates for the early BBSes (80-82s) and FurryMUCK (90) so that they have some more time-linear context in with the rest of your review of events.
