Round Island Burrowing Boa (Bolyeria multicarinata)
Native to Mauritius - a place where many animals have gone extinct - the Round Island Burrowing Boa had a small range of only 1.5 square kilometres (0.58 sq miles) in the savanna and hardwood forests of the island nation. As it’s name suggests, it likely enjoyed burrowing underground for protection and, perhaps, hunting purposes.
It was once found on Flat Island, Round Island, Gunner’s Quoin, and Ile de la Passe, but survived into the 1900s on Round Island alone.
Rare by the time 1949 rolled around, the Round Island Burrowing Boa was soon pressed into extinction by the soil erosion caused by introduced rabbits and goats. It was last seen on Round Island in 1975
Extinction Date According to the IUCN Red List: 1994
