Again a scene of a played game. After giving Karp and his brother to an enemy, Varlam managed to remain not caught for years. But one day he was finally found by the people of Grey Culmen and they brought Varlam to the Lord Commander, Alek. For his treachery Varlam got whipped badly, almost to death even, but Karp stopped it. Not because he felt pity - he definitely didn't - but because he didn't want to let Varlam die that way. He wants his childhood best friend to get away as soon as possible, to roam the land free again so that Karp could hunt him down and get his vengeance by killing Varlam himself.
